The 27-year-old left hander from Delhi hit 100 from 85 balls, finding the boundary 21 times and completing the task inside a session in the third cricket Test.

It is believed to be the fastest century on debut.

Dhawan replaced the hard hitting Virender Sehwag, who also scored a century on debut, for this match and now has people wondering why it took so long to make the switch.

An elegant batsman, his drives through the covers and short arm punches square of the wicket left the Australian fielding grasping at air and bowlers gasping for it.

Dhawan did not face a ball in the over bowled before lunch and went to tea on 106no from 90balls while his senior partner Murali Vijay was just 42no from 85 balls.

India scored 153 in the session and will have a lead by lunch tomorrow if they keep scoring at this rate.

None of the bowlers could find a way to quiet Dhawan and Vijay did his best to ease Nathan Lyon out of the attack by hitting him for 17 runs after the spinner had bowled three overs two maidens 0-7.

The Shikhar century will hurt Australia because two batsmen failed to get theirs on what is the third day.

The visitor’s tail wagged for Pup, putting on 135 runs and taking the score to what seemed like a respectable total of 408 just before lunch.

Mitchell Starc was on the verge of becoming Australia’s first No9 batsman since 1947 to score a century, but was cruelly denied.

He would also have become the first every batting in that position to do the same in India.

The bowler was undone on 99, nicking off to Ishant Sharma who had teased him outside off for much of the over that was to be the batsman’s last.

Starc had looked great recommencing on 20 this morning, but was not the only batsman denied a century.

He had started the with Steve Smith who was 58no overnight. The pair moved into their stride quickly and steadied an innings that had been wobbling at 7-251 when they came together.

Smith was on 92 when he was drawn from the crease by Pragyan Ojha and became MS Dhoni’s second stumping victim of the innings.

The pair had put on 97 for the 8th wicket and given the visitors their best start of the series.

Nathan Lyon (9no) stuck around with Starc and helped put on 51 for the 9th wicket before Starc fell.

Doherty was the last to go, adjudged LBW to Ravi Ashwin.

The irony of Starc and Smith’s performance (191 of the 408 runs) is that neither may have played if the side had not stood down four players in the lead up to the match.

Smith batting at 5 had been criticised by many, but he came to the wicket after the fall of three quick wickets and from the first minutes brought some energy to the innings.

Ed Cowan, who scored 86, had become bogged down when Dave Warner (71), Michael Clarke (0) and Phil Hughes (2) fell in quick succession.
“I’d dug a little bit of a hole and, I guess, it was more that a few wickets had fallen,” Cowan said later. “I was just so intent on not being another wicket in that little collapse.

“He (Smith) just rejuvenated the whole thing and has played superbly. He’s a great player of spin, there is no doubt about that and he showed that again.”
